BlackDoomShadow, who also goes by the shortened nickname BDS, is a regular user on Wii Hardware who created Shooting Down Stereotypes. He is also the first elected president of Wii Hardware.[1] He is notable for his radical and controversial opinions on a number of subjects, including Wii third party support, rival consoles, trolls, and casual gamers.
GameFAQs history
Early history
BDS first joined GameFAQs on November 28, 2005, in order to ask a question of the Shadow the Hedgehog board, as he was writing a review for the game-hence, his username draws from the main protagonist (Shadow) and antagonist (Black Doom). However, he personally dislikes this game and does not use this username on any other forum, instead using the name Ultra Hyper Shadow, which he has used for over half a decade.
Pokemon Diamond (May 2007-September 2007)
After registering and asking the question, however, BDS did not return to GameFAQs for several years, before returning in May 2007 to begin trading on the Pokemon Diamond boards. He obtained many rare Pokemon by trading legit Mews he obtained from a Nintendo event and cloned using a glitch in Emerald.
Wii Hardware (September 2007-December 2007)
BDS settled at Wii Hardware in late August 2007. It was in September that he began Shooting Down Stereotypes, a ten-installment series of topics that debunk popular urban legends, myths, and inaccuracies regarding the Wii.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (October 2007-January 2008)
He began posting more on the Super Smash Bros. Brawl board, and by December 2007 had entirely left Wii Hardware for that board. He was a large supporter of Ridley and had been since before the release of Super Smash Bros. Melee and often had debates over Ridley and other characters he supported. Notably, he made a joke topic in November saying that R.O.B. had been confirmed and would be revealed on the official website the next day, R.O.B. ended up actually being in the game as a surprise character. He "survived" several major events, like the "Ganondorf video" (a prisoner of war being brutally decapitated) and the "Wario incident" (a string of account suicides linked to disgusting images posted over three dozen times in one night). By the time Brawl was released, he had posted there less frequently, and has now stopped posting there altogether.
Wii Hardware (January 2008-present)
He returned to Wii Hardware in January 2008, where he posted a controversial topic called Nintendo's Problem that reached 500 posts. It was also at this time that BDS went to PS3 Hardware and posted a "peace treaty" respectfully asking the forum to stop sending trolls to Wii Hardware; BDS got a one-week suspension for a "board invasion." This was controversial at Message Board Help, where a topic arguing over the suspension nearly reached 200 posts before being locked. He has since returned to normal posting at the forum before deciding to start this wiki after 47pik jokingly suggested that a WikiQuote section be devoted to troll comments on the forum.
In August 2008, BDS's "rule" was challenged, and thus the 2008 Wii Hardware Presidential Election began; in November BDS successfully won the election and became the first elected president of the board.
Current Events (February 2008-present)
Current Events is the most infamous social board on GameFAQs, sometimes referred to as "GameFAQs's 4chan" after the site known for disturbing images and lawbreaking posters. He made two 500 topics in March and April 2008, a "choose your own adventure" story in March and a religion debate in April. Another 500 topic in June and July 2008, made with his alt under the title "I work at Area 51, ask me anything" was accepted into the GameFAQs archive for its unusual subject matter.[2] A second CYOA posted in July 2008, "You are SBAllen," was well received for being dramatic and complex instead of humorous. He was one of the first people to respond to the now infamous topic created by JediKnight12345, who claimed to have burned down a church and posted pictorial evidence. He also created a number of minor fads, such as a topic where he said "I just caught my girlfriend kissing my sister!" which spawned dozens of spin-off parodies, and a topic called "I almost sent porn to my mom," similarly spawning dozens of parodies.
In December 2008, he made a third 500 topic, "I could hear my sister and her friends behind her locked door," a story that seemingly started as an incestual tale before abruptly becoming a dinosaur invasion epic. The story, called "Girls and Raptors," was very well received for its dialogue and sudden plot twists, and while originally denied, was eventually added to the GameFAQs Archive eight months later.[3] In January 2009 he started two fads involving posting an animated .gif image of Nite Owl screaming from Watchmen in account suicide topics, and a picture of Ozymandias smirking, also from Watchmen, which is posted in any random topic and resulted in mass moderations the night it started. In May and June 2009, BDS continued the "You are SBAllen" CYOA almost a year after the first installment. The topic reached 500 posts. In late June, he posted the final installment in the trilogy, in which BDS fittingly got the 500th post to conclude the story. He later posted a sequel to "Girls and Raptors" in July 2009. It was added to the GameFAQs Archive a month later.[4]
BDS was nominated for "Funniest CEman" in the CE Awards in July 2009. He received the second highest number of votes, losing to Tadg30. The first installment of his raptor story was nominated for "Best Topic;" he came in second place for that award as well. In August and September 2009, BDS posted two new CYOAs about Rorschach and Taylor Swift, respectively. The Taylor Swift CYOA was notable for coincidentally being started one day before the incident with Kanye West at the 2009 MTV VMAs, and thus the story got a great deal of sudden publicity. In October 2009, he posted a unique roleplay topic in which many CEmen fought velociraptors. Even though roleplay topics are usually frowned upon on CE, the topic was extremely popular, and got to 500 posts within two hours.
Stories
BDS is known on CE for his fictional stories, which often involve fictional characters and real life individuals interacting in strange, epic encounters between good and evil.
- CYOA: You are SBAllen was a trilogy of choose your own adventure stories about GameFAQs admin SBAllen and his allies. The first part was posted in July 2008, the second in May 2009, and the third in June 2009.
- Girls and Raptors is BDS's most famous story. It detailed an attempted brother/sister incestual encounter gone wrong when the narrator's sister inexplicably transforms into a velociraptor. The story became famous for this random plot twist and ensuing battles between humans and dinosaurs. The story was posted in December 2008 and a sequel, from the perspective of the raptor-sister herself, was posted in July 2009. Both stories were added to the GameFAQs Archive.
- CYOA: You are Rorschach was a choose your own adventure involving the Watchmen protagonist Rorschach being sent to the year 2009 and going on an adventure.
- CYOA: You are Taylor Swift was a choose your own adventure in which country singer Taylor Swift tried to stop the Jonas Brothers and other evil forces from ruining the 2009 MTV VMAs.
- Area 51 was a supposedly nonfictional account of the narrator's life working at the mysterious Area 51 military base. The story was submitted to the GameFAQs Archive. It was posted in June 2008.
- Raptor Hunting was a unique story that involved the participation of all of CE. It took place in October 2009 and involved many CEmen hunting velociraptors in a roleplay format.
Television: Broadcast TV (March 2008-May 2008)
BDS posts semi-regularly on the TV board. He was one of the first people to respond to the now infamous topic by the user Triad_Thunderr, who started a now widespread fad of casually referring to Lost characters of similar ethnicities as the same person. However, he took a short hiatus from the board for fear of being spoiled about the Lost season finale. Kirbyfan, a Wii Hardware troll, attempted to add a summary of the finale to this page, but instead added a summary of an already aired episode. With the conclusion of the fourth season, BDS temporarily stopped posting there.
Movies: At the Theater (November 2008-present)
Although BDS occasionally posted on the movies board throughout the year (starting with the release of Cloverfield in January), he became a regular there in November when the marketing for Watchmen ramped up. He has since provided up-to-the-minute news regarding the film, and even after its release, he continues to regularly post there.
Television: Broadcast TV (January 2009-May 2009)
BDS began posting again on the TV board for the duration of Lost's fifth season. When the season concluded, he again temporarily left the board.
Other boards
BDS has posted at several other boards on a semi-regular basis during his time on GameFAQs, including the Pokemon Battle Revolution board (June 2007), Metroid Prime 3: Corruption board (August 2007), and Movies: At the Theater (January 2008). He and another user bought the strategy guide for Metroid Prime 3 several days before the game's release and made a topic answering questions about the game. He also has a secret board he owns called Shadow Warrior, but it is rarely used. He was also a member of the secret Wii Hardware social board along with Metroidfan19, Megamanxzero15, and Comebackking1.
Private boards
In May 2008, BDS was invited along with a few other CE users to Bunny!, a private board that acts as the "United Nations" of the three major GameFAQs social boards-Current Events, Random Insanity, and Life, the Universe, and Everything. In August 2008, he was invited to another private board called G. Other, whose owner won it as part of a contest held by SBAllen. In May 2009, he was invited to the private board ! after the admins noticed he was a Metal Gear Solid fan (for which the board is named). Then, in June 2009, he was invited to yet another private board, Restaurant at the End of the Universe, but in October 2009, he was removed for inactivity.
Moderation history
BDS has had a number of major moderations. He was suspended and put in purgatory in January 2008 for posting an unusually polite peace treaty on the PS3 Hardware board, deemed a board invasion. This spawned a large debate on Message Board Help. In February 2008, he was warned for posting a Lost topic with a minor spoiler in the title. Finally, he had a whopping 14 topics deleted in one day off the now-defunct secret Wii Hardware social board, but only lost 3 karma. In June 2008, he was warned for making an attention topic targeted at Ace, a Wii General user who had challenged BDS's claim to ruler of Wii Hardware. He had the judgment to use his alt to post an offensive Virginia Tech massacre joke, which got his alt warned in September 2008. Just a few days later, though, he was warned for making a pro-4chan/Anonymous post via the "moderator discretion" clause. In November 2008 his alt was warned for a Twilight joke spoiler topic, and just days later his main account was warned for making a "Horatio Caine joke" about a man killed by stampeding Black Friday shoppers.
BDS nearly went six months without a major moderation until May 2009, when he was warned for posting a "Lawl for Kids" comic on the subject of racial stereotypes in the media. In June, he was warned on his alt account for posting an offensive image of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Trademarks
- A very early trademark involved BDS's name acronym's resemblance to BDSM. Some users would add a word starting with M, like BlackDoomShadowMan, in order to abbreviate him as BDSM. This fad eventually died out
- On Current Events, BDS is well known for a "gimmick" in which he pretends to be insanely obsessed with country singer Taylor Swift, to the point of deity-like idolatry
- Derailing troll topics and arguments with irrelevant conversations
- Posting pictures of Lost's smoke monster hitting a wall of text or a man climbing a wall of text when a "wall of text" (large post not broken into paragraphs) is posted
- Refusing (somewhat controversially) to assist anyone whose question is easily answered by using Google
- Pretending to be in love with Kirbyfan, a reference to Kirbyfan's actual seeming obsession with BDS and his postings
- Calling himself the "supreme dictator overlord of Wii Hardware" (a title both overly appreciated by some and contested by others). This line was what spurred the 2008 Wii Hardware Presidential Election
- Yelling "Not EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY JOHN!" in troll topics (similar to Metroidfan's "Another nail in the PSP's coffin"). This is a reference to a blooper from the Lost episode "Enter 77", in which Sayid's actor intentionally yells his line "Not every nook and cranny, John" much louder than he is supposed to. This has become a minor fad on Lost fansites, such as the GameFAQs TV board. On rarer occasions, he will say another commonly repeated Sayid line from "The Constant"-"Why ARE YOU FLYING DIRECTLY INTO THE THUNDERHEAD?"
Trivia
- Has made eleven 500 topics: "Nintendo's Problem" on Wii Hardware, "I work at Area 51, ask me anything," "CYOA: You are SBAllen," "I could hear my sister and her friends behind her locked door" (retroactively called "Girls and Raptors"), "CYOA: You are SBAllen: The Sequel! (retroactively called "CYOA: You are SBAllen - Part 2"), "CYOA: You are SBAllen - Part 3!" (in which BDS got the 500th post), "My name is Jenny. Me and my friends are gonna play a trick on my brother!" (retroactively called "Girls and Raptors: The Sequel"), a live-posting topic about Michael Jackson's memorial, "CYOA: You are Rorschach!," "CYOA: You are Taylor Swift!," and "ATTN: All raptor hunters - the hunt begins now! Get in here!" on CE.
- Was the subject of the first and only "Rate that Wii Hardware user!" topic, a topic intended to be a daily series. The topic was deleted for being off-topic.
- Once had a discussion with SBAllen, the admin of GameFAQs, over correct usage of the word "they" in regards to a person whose gender is known.
- Was occasionally mistaken for Endless Doom, a hacker who account suicided nearly 200 accounts in June 2008 on Current Events.
- Has been regularly featured in the "Which CEman are you sleeping with tonight?" seconds game on Current Events.
- Started a 500 topic ("I work at Area 51, ask me anything") in late June 2008 on Current Events in which he (and later, a second user) claimed to work at Area 51 and made a number of claims about the Earth's control by aliens. The topic was accepted into the GameFAQs archive.[5] Shortly after it reached 500 posts, he made a follow up topic that was also archived.[6] In October 2009, his "raptor hunt" story was archived.[7]
- Created a Wii Hardware Social Board on InvisionFree in May 2008. The board has thrived from postings by regular Wii Hardware members and is still active as of January 2009.
- After being warned for pro-Anonymous postings, he got into an argument with moderator Alucard188 which resulted in the latter being modded for flaming. BDS and Alucard have since had a pseudo-rivalry regarding 4chan.
YouTube
Main wiki: Master Chief Sucks at Ordering Wiki
BDS also makes videos for YouTube under the name UltraHyperShadow. His "Master Chief Sucks at Ordering" series is his ongoing series, started in October 2007, an is currently the second most popular "Master Chief series" on YouTube, after the original series itself. The series concluded its first season in May. "Master Chief sucks" videos are a fad on Youtube in which users pretend to be Master Chief, voiced by the Microsoft Sam voice synthesizer, and give advice or try to play various video games, with disasterous results based on Master Chief's idiocy. BDS's Master Chief videos revolve around a central plot of Master Chief attempting to defeat the evil CATS and his minions, who include Jack Thompson and L. Ron Hubbard. In July 2008, he began making a miniseries that focused on new characters to be introduced in season 2, which started in September 2008. Season 2 ran until May 2009, and another miniseries followed that summer.
In addition, BDS uploaded a few songs from the soundtrack of Super Smash Bros. Brawl under the name UltraBrawl in order to avoid a potential account lock for uploading copyrighted material. He was the first person to upload the "Golden Sun", "His World", "Zelda Theme remix", and 02 battle songs to Youtube. He also used this account to upload the much-wanted ending montage music from Lost's 4th season penultimate episode, "There's No Place Like Home, part 1." He later used the account to post a humerous video called "The Truth About the Large Hadron Collider." In addition, he uses an alternate account called UltraYTpoops to upload "Youtube poops," or humerous videos with remixed audio and video from 90s cartoons and video games.
T3H Metroid Galaxy
Main wiki: T3H Metroid Galaxy Wiki
BDS began writing a comic series called T3H Metroid Galaxy on May 16, 2006. The comic has since had 150 issues, a spin-off, and several other specials. It is his largest work to date. The comic is a stick figure comic (although some characters are more complex) that initially parodied the Metroid universe, but later included characters from all forms of gaming and movies.
Wikis
BDS runs several wikis on Wikia, including a wiki for T3H Metroid Galaxy, a wiki for Lost spoilers, and Scratchpad mini wikis for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Other activities
BDS is also a knowledgable computer user. He is moderately skilled in HTML. He is also skilled in writing disruptive viruses and moderate hacking. He is also a regular visitor to /b/, the random board of 4chan notable for its rowdy posters and originating many famous Internet memes.
